24401. PCSO 7484 Adam Jassat
Adam was around our area informing people of local burglaries in the community. We spoke to him about having problems with our little boy Kevin. Adam came and spoke to Kev. He has also been around regularly to monitor Kevins behaviour.Though this monitoring Kevins behaviour has changed and he is now behaving himself more due to Adams help. He has helped our family move forward as has been a good role model to Kevin.

24361. Mark Lumsden
Right at the birth of the idea of an Olympics-themed festival for Great Lumley, Mark stepped up as a champion for the event. He declared his intention to be 100% behind the award from both a professional and personal standpoint. At a public meeting a few weeks later he stood up and declared his total support for the idea with conviction and enthusiasm. The decision to go ahead with Going for Gold Great Lumley Festival was based in no small measure on Marks impassioned presentation. He joined the organising committee and demonstrated that his commitment was much more than fine words. Little did he know, however, that a few weeks later he would be struck down by a heart attack. This took Mark out of the arrangements at a key time and we expected to hear nothing more from him for a long time.We were wrong. A few weeks later he was back - his enthusiasm undimmed. Much of the organisaion was well in hand but he had promised to help and he did. Wise advice, good contacts and promises of practical help were all forthcoming and he did not disappoint. At one point I was told (by others) that they could not see how he could attend the event over the weekend because of his rest day arrangements. Rest days or not he turned up as promised and gave fantastic support and encouragement.Mark went way beyond the call of duty for us simply because he believed this event would be good for the community. Im told there can be some cynicsm in the police force about the impact of events like Going for Gold. In this case the cynics would be wrong because the voice of the community would say otherwise. Going for Gold was a positive success in bringing diverse sections of the community together. Time (or the crime statistics) will tell but Great Lumley is much better for the personal and professional input of Mark Lumsden.I am delighted to nominate Mark for a WOW Award.

24196. PCSO 6639 Rebecca Heseltine
PCSO Heseltine attended our home as part of the response to an attempted break-in of one of our sheds on Tuesday 10th July 2012. She spent a considerable amount of time suggesting various ways of improving security around the property and was both knowledgeable and inovative with her suggestions. Her manner was professional yet friendly and as a result of her intervention we have already been able to impliment some of her ideas. My husband and myself felt this officer to be worthy of a commendation as she was so helpful throughout the investigation.

24191. P.C.722 Garrett
On Tuesday 10th July we were victims of an attempted break-in to one of our garden sheds. Various police officers attended our call for help at approximately 7.00.a.m. Following their intervention a youth was repremanded the following day. P.C. Garrett telephoned to give a very accurate and succinct account of what was to happen and proceeded to outline how we would be kept informed . He then rang after the week-end to give an update after the youth had been in front of the Magistrates. This is superb policing and my husband and myself would like to acknowledge our gratitude to this police officer for his professionalism in executing his role and put his name forward for commendation.

Submitted on behalf of Michelle JoplingOn 20th August, 2011, I was subject of an incident which will continue to have an impact on the rest of my life.Alone and afraid, I called 999 and PC Campbell attended to me at the scene. Despite my distress, he was calm and supportive. He was patient and kind; qualities that I desperately needed at the time. Throughout the subsequent investigation period, I have been communicating with PC Matt Bartsch who has been nothing less than amazing all of the time. He has kept me updated through the whole process and made time for me when I had questions or queries. He has always delivered information clearly and been considerate of my circumstances.I feel that the officers should be recognised for everything that they have done for me as I simply cannot find the words to thank them enough.

PC K. Lawrence attended our residence within minutes of my husband ringing 999 on Tuesday 10th July 2012 at approximately 7.00.a.m. regarding an attempted break-in to one of the sheds on our property. She offerred to refer us for further support which we appreciated but felt was not necessary. My husband and myself were very impressed by the total response given that morning and feel PC Lawrence should receive recognition for her intervention.

Knowing that my friend had a spare key he rang her but to no avail. Both being extremely worried, they contacted the Police and PC Hopps brought my friend to the house allowing PC Hopps to gain entry to see that everything was okay. PC Hopps was very calm, kind and patient and a credit to his uniform.

23956. DC 1063 Darren Cresswell

24041. PC 1918 Gavin Reay
On Tuesday night the 19th June 2012 at approximately 23.00 hours I and my wife were driving from Malton to the A691. Between Durham and the A1 turn off on the dual carriageway we broke down. I turned on the flashing lights. Fortunately PC Reay saw us and came behind us to see what was wrong. He left his blue lights flashing to light up our presence on the very fast and busy road. He was really helpful and phoned our Insurers and did all he could for us. He stayed with us until around 1.00 am when the breakdown truck arrived to take us home. He was most helpful and reassuring and we were very pleased that he was able to stay with us. We thought that PC Reay by his actions went beyond the call of duty.

23970. DC 1665 Dave Ripley
I was burgled over the weekend of 6th July and the incident was attended by DC Ripley who attended extremely promptly, was very professional and spent a lot of time with me understanding what had happened. Although it was stressful for me DC Ripley helped me though the situation and enabled me to get information from banks etc that I wouldnt have thought of doing myself. His extremely professional and caring manner put me at rest and reassured me. DC Ripley followed up with me later in the day to advise that he had already identified a suspect, not only was I extremely impressed but I was very reassured to have been given follow up so rapidly. Despite it being an unpleasant incident, Durham Constabulary showed themselves to be very professional, very caring and citizen focussed - all I can say is thanks to DC Ripley and well done to Durham Constabulary.

23885. PC 2380 Alistair ROGOWSKI
My teenage son went to stay overnight with his Gran on the 30th of June. He took his beloved bike with him and foolishly left it in her rear garden. Myself and his father always drum it into him never ever to leave his bike anywhere and this was the fisrt time he had ever done this. To his horror he awoke the next day to find his pride and joy had vanished! A bit of background to this bike before I go any further and people think "its just a bike". My husband has always ensured that our children have the best bikes we can possibly afford partly due to his dad dying of bone cancer when my husband was just 6 and the last gift he had was a lovely new grifter. When we bought Antonio his latest one just before Christmas 2010 my husband discovered he would be working away in Iraq and it would be his first christmas without seeing them. He was also very worried he may not see them again as his job was very dangerous. It was expensive and we couldnt really afford it but we borrowed and Antonio was astonished and over the moon with his Dads present to him on Xmas day. Since then it has been well cared for. He participates in 4X Biking locally and sometimes travels for his sport, he is quite talented and has all the professional protective gear. His bike is so much more to him than just a bike. It was duly reported stolen and a very helpful, Police Officer (PC RUCK) came out to take details, she forwarded a photo and email to other officers kept in touch with me via email over the next 4 days and she was a great help keeping me informed and starting the ball rolling. We started to lose hope until a call from my mum to say police had been in touch and recovered my sons bike! This was July the 4th, it had felt like a long 4 days but to think it took only 4 days to recover it is amazing! Especially when you take into account that PC ROGOWSKI had only seen PC RUCKs email that very morning and he had only just come back on duty after being off!!!! He was driving down a local road in plain clothing when he saw and recognised the bike, even though it had been painted and various bits had been changed. Truly incredible that he instantly knew this was the stolen bike he had seen that very morning in the email! We never thought we would be lucky enough to get it back. PC ROGOWSKI has explained each and every stage of the process to us, he was patient and listened to my son and myself whilst taking the time to write statements and Victim Statements, we felt totally at ease with him and more importantly that he cared. He even brought Antonios bike home to us himself today and updated us on the cases progress so far, we feel so lucky that PC ROGOWSKI read our email and was attentive enough to recognise a disguised stolen bike. We cant thank him enough and feel he thoroughly deserves to be nominated to WOW.

23356. PCSO 6357 Cath Egan
Myself and the committee of The Crookhall Foundation recently held a grand opening, after 16 years of hard slog, tied in with the fact that we are the first field in County Durham to apply and be successful in becoming a Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee field. Cath Egan was asked to come along and sure enough she "policed" the whole day from enjoying it to traffic parking and crowd control. Many thanks and I hope she can keep her promise and return for the Big Meeting in July and do the same.

23331. PC 197 Alistair Henry & PCSO 6326 Ian Feldon
PC Henry and PCSO Feldon attained following damage to property caused by some local youngsters. Both went out of their way to identify the young people involved. They kept me updated with regards to the progress and through their involvement the young person responsible was identified, apologised and paid in full for the repairs to be completed. If it had not been for the commitment shown by Alistair and Ian I would have been left significantly out of pocket and feel that their approach and handling of the situation was a credit to them and Durham Police Authority.

22462. PCSO 7182 Julie Brown
On the morning of Monday 30th April 2012, damage was discovered to the play house in the grounds of Bishop Ian Ramsey School, Medomsley which had occurred over the weekend. On Wednesday 2nd April 2012 PCSO Julie Brown attended the school and viewed the CCTV of the resultant damage and vandalism. Having recognised the group of youths, she took immediate action by visiting their addresses and speaking to those responsible for the criminal damage. Her prompt action has had an extremely positive effect in that those responsible for the damage have stayed away from the school and no further incidents have occurred to date, leaving the amenities in place for the children to enjoy.

22421. PCSO 7147 Chris Elms
I wish to nominate Chris for a Wow award for his valuable contribution to St Josephs school. His actions have resulted in a much needed petition to employ an essential school crossing patrol officer for both schools in Coundon. Chris has also organised the police dogs Ben and Jet to visit the school to increase the childrens awareness on road safety, internet safety and stranger danger. Chris has offered support and advice in our community monthly coffee afternoons and has successfully got involved with the local community. Due to Chris frequent visits to St Josephs the children are beginning to see him as not only a friend but a role model.

22371. PCSO 6481 Amanda Jepson
Amanda has gone out of her way throughout the last 10 weeks to support my Uniformed Public Services students with a project they have carried out with Durham Constabulary at Peterlee Police Station. She took a considerable amount of responsibility for planning and working with the students to achieve the projects objectives. This included taking on jobs that had not been tasked to her and providing support to cover absent colleagues. During the project Amanda has developed a friendly and trusting relationship with the students. The group feel able to talk openly to her and often stop to chat with her in Peterlee Town Centre when they see her on patrol. Her patience, tenacity and determination to do her best for all the students has been notable throughout the project and she is a credit to Durham Constabulary.

22304. PCSO 6788 Gemma Ryder
We are two sisters who share a house and we had a horrible week last week (beginning on Friday 27th April 2012) when a gang of youths began to vandalise the fence and gate of the empty house next door to where we live in Shildon. We were already worried about our security following a large part of the fence being stolen and so when this gang returned to kick down more of the fence day after day (during the afternoon over the weekend and early evening on weekdays) we felt really desperate for help because we thought they would start on our fence next and be able to get into our garden. After we’d had to call the police out 5 times in 6 days as further damage occurred daily it was decided that PCSO Gemma Ryder should patrol the area behind our houses in the hope that a regular police presence would scare the gang off. Last Wednesday (2nd May 2012) on the very first evening of her patrolling Gemma along with a colleague PCSO Daniel Blackwood, called at our home at 8pm to reassure us that she would be around often and it just happened that they were actually in our house when we heard the gang arrive and start kicking at the fence for the second time that day. We’ve never seen anyone move as quickly, Gemma and Daniel were out of our house and round the corner in no time at all and rounded the gang up before they had time to run away. Within ten minutes Gemma was back to tell us she had the names and addresses of them all and had warned them that if there was any more anti-social behaviour or vandalism she would know who it was and they would be in serious trouble. Since then we have had no more trouble at all and we believe that is because Gemma has a no nonsense approach that kids understand, we think she is a wonderful ambassador for the police. Gemma called back later in the week to check all was well and has visited us again today to reassure us that she is still keeping an eye on the place. We are really thankful to Gemma for restoring our peace of mind and for her kindness to us when we were so upset about the gang and feeling very vulnerable.

22216. P.C. 2638 Andrew Rochelle
I would like to nominate PC Rochelle for a WOW award for the following reason in relation to an incident which occurred on Sunday 15th April 2012. Due to family concerns regarding my late father-in-law , my daughter and myself had cause to travel 80 miles to Darlington as quickly as we could; in the meantime the minister from the church had alerted the police that there were concerns regarding the health and well being of my father-in-law. P.C. Rochelle and his colleagues attended promptly and gained entry and found my father-in-law deceased in his hallway. When my daughter and I arrived at the house already having the strong premonition of what we would be arriving to, P.C. Rochelle came at once to us when he saw us getting out of our car. He kindly advised us to sit and wait in the warm inside our car and came along at once and very kindly and sensitively explained to us what had happened and what would be happening as events unfurled. He kept coming between us and the house and kept us informed every step of the way. When we were able to go into the house to identify my father-in-laws body, PC Rochelle and his Sargeant were both there for us and acted in a very kindly, understanding and professional way making us feel that they really cared and understood how we felt. PC Rochelle by his manner and attitude gave us support and strength through a traumatic sad experience. In this day and age people are too quick too criticise and a bit backward in giving praise and recognition for what must be a most difficult job, hence I could not let this event pass without some comment. On behalf of myself and my family THANK YOU PC Rochelle.

22054. PC 1943 Lorraine Nelson
This lady visited us twice in relation to a very sensitive situation. She sat and listened to us without making any judgement and then proceeded to take lengthy statements from both of us, returning for signatures after working through her break to type out the statements, as she knew how important it was to us. She was very professional and intelligent and a thoroughly nice person obviously dedicated to her work. This is just the type of officer the police force needs.

22022. PC 1788 Jonathan Dixon
Nomination submitted on behalf of Gail CoulthardOn the evening of 3rd April, 2012, I was forced to stop my car due to a complete lack of visibility caused by high winds driving snow from the fields across the road. Other drivers were in a similar situation and I feared that my stationery car would be hit as no one could see around them. From arriving at the scene, PC Dixon took charge of the situation; he remained calm and was reassuring and understanding of my distressed state. On a practical level, he escorted me to Harperley roundabout, from which point I was able to make my way home; slowly but safely. I would just like to say a sincere thank you not just for his practical help but just as importantly for his reassurance and support in what I can only describe as a terrifying situation. PC Dixon is a credit to himself and to Durham Constabulary.

21937. PC 394 Chris Metcalfe
I would like to nominate Chris Metcalfe for the way he handled the 2 young people who damaged the front door of building in March 2012. 21708. PCSO 7095 Brian Donnelly
In April 2012 myself and neighbours were having trouble with youths running on our bungalow roofs and riding motorcycles up and down the footpaths. We are all elderly or disabled but Pc Donnelly came out every night until they stopped. He also called on all of us to reassure us that he was on the case and would not stop until it had stopped . He also called in on us when he was off duty or going to and from work and made all of us feel safe, knowing he was there for us.

21647. SC 3645 Jonathan Cowell
I got on a 43 bus late on Sunday 15th April, returning from holiday in Venice. Half way home I realised I had left my suitcase in Durham Bus station with all my holiday stuff including little pressies and my favorite bits of jewellery. I asked the driver if they could ring the bus station as I remembered seeing a police man and two security men there but no, she couldnt. I jumped off the bus, hoping I could catch a bus back to Durham but it was Sunday and getting late. I thought then to ring the non emergency number for the police I had on my mobile phone. When I got through I explained my predicament. The man I spoke to said he would try to get through to someone in Durham and advised me, as it was late, to continue my homward journey on the next bus. Imagine my joy when Mr. Cowell rang to say he had my bag!It might not be catching criminals but it made this member of the community very happy. I would also like to thank the lost property person Natalie Coad.

21387. PCSO 7185 Jan Simlesa
Over the last year I have been having problems with both of my grandchildren who live with me. Some of these problems have been abuse, stealing, and running away. Having to deal with these things and my mother dying I asked for help. (The police must have been sick of the calls to say the youngest had once again run away) Then along came Jan, who talked to them at their level and more importantly listening to the whole family who were trying to stop this behaviour before it got to the point of them being young criminals. I am proud to say that fingers crossed it has worked or is working as Jan still pops in to check on them when he can. I want to say publicly thanks to Jan and all the staff at Consett and surounding areas. Your work has changed 2 young peoples lives around and I know how grateful they and I am. I know that this can all change but with Jans help and support we are on the right track.

21209. PCSO 7147 Chris Elms
After years and years of problems with off road motor cycles, Chris has taken the time and trouble to deal with this matter. Although this may seem trivial to some, when you have the noise every weekend from 9 am until 6pm, it becomes very upsetting. With the help of Chris, the numbers are now reducing and we can at last have some peace. Many thanks.

21144. PC 1806 Angela Dixon
On the 5th February 2012 Commercial Street Willington, I slipped on ice sustaining a complicated fracture of my right Tibia & Fibula requiring over 4 hours of surgical intervention. This young lady went far and beyond the call of duty in assisting me and my relatives until I was transported to University Hospital Durham by ambulance. She not only showed compassion, professionalism but total humility for a fellow human being. If it was in my power she would be awarded the highest commendation and accolade any police officer could receive. I prayed for a guardian angel and I received one in the form Angela Dixon. I shall always be indebted to her for her help. She is a true inspiration and a wonderful example of my idea of a modern police officer. I know that she is an absolute credit to the Durham Constabulary who should be honored to have an officer of such high caliber in their service. My letter to The Chief Constable of the 19th March 2012 sums up my appreciation towards her.

21089. PC 2386 Ralph Thompson
I wish to nominate Ralph as an exemplary example of professionalism, courteousness, sympathy and support. The interpersonal skills Ralph demonstrated and displayed was a shining example of how 21st policing should be delivered. The inherent high qualities, standards and values are intrinsic and natural to him; a true natural police officer. Ralph successfully exceeded in delivering a personal and bespoke service on a human level (although the legal outcome of the case in question may not have been successful). Ralph successfully establishes the emotional requirements, faces and acknowledges them head on. I received an amazing level of customer service. Please recognise and reward Ralphs qualities.
Date: 10:52:12 23/04/12
21002. PC 1685 Alex Riley
I would like to nominate Alex for arranging mediation and helping resolve an issue between neighbours. He swiftly organised a round table discussion where everyone was able to give their views in a non confrontational setting, breaking down barriers, communicating openly, discussing issues and moving to resolution. People started the meeting with little communication and ended it speaking to each other again.

20868. PCSO 6750 Sarah Willis & PCSO 7194 David Dove
Easington Community Science College held a careers road show for year 8 pupils and the two police officers spent the day talking and interacting with our pupils. They made the experience fun and interesting and our pupils really enjoyed seeing what was involved in a career with the police. Their help on what was a long day was very much appreciated.

20527. PCSO 6055 Debra Robson and PCSO 7182 Julie Brown
Over the last 12-18 months we have experienced a range of anti-social behaviour from various tenants within our street. After numerous telephone calls to the Policing Team and attending PACT meetings I finally got a 5* response from PCSO Debra Robson and PCSO Julie Brown who I must say are an asset to the force. After our meeting they reassured me that they would visit the street to see what was going on, which they did followed up with the police being in the street for the remainder of that week due to a.s.b. I must say the response from the Policing Teams was absolutley fantastic and now we are hopeing our street might get back to being a lovely place to live once again. I also want to say a big thank you to Inspector David Turner who liaised with Private Housing landlords on our behalf and had the time to update us on the outcome. Once again Thank You .

20079. PCSO 7354 Andrew Taylor
Following help last year in dealing with some young lads poaching our fishing pond. I approached Andrew (end January 24th) for help in getting some work done on our fishing pond by the probation service. He said it was possible and would get back to me at earliest opportunity. Next day he supplied name and phone number. That to me deserves a WOW nomination as I was not expecting it to be quick. The work commences next Tuesday after discussions etc with Helen and her team. Well done Andrew Taylor

19432. PC 2210 George Brown & Sgt 413 Stephen Norris
Following a disagreement with her employer, my daughter walked out but returned a short time later to collect her tools. Despite several requests, the owner advised that she did not have the tools and stated that they must have been taken. My daughter informed the police who initially advised her that this was a civil matter. However, after a further complaint the matter was investigated by PC Brown and Sgt Norris who managed to get my daughters tools back enabling her to continue her trade as a hairdresser. These two officers brought common sense to a situation that was becoming very frustrating and circular. Their help and support was and is appreciated. I am very grateful to them both for their interaction to resolve the matter. Thank you!

19643. DC 86 Catherine Glass
I would like to nominate DC Glass for her outstanding professional attitude. Not only did this officer keep me up to date as my case progressed but she also demonstrated great kindness and understanding during what was an incredibly difficult time for me. Not only did she stand out from the other staff I dealt with but also when I had to go to the station to answer allegations from my estranged husband, DC Glass went out of her way to make the experience as bearable as possible with her easygoing manner.

19825. PCSO 7185 Jan Simlesa
Submitted on behalf of Mrs Owen.Mrs Owen had received an order from an Indian takeaway totalling £60 plus. She had not ordered the food and was upset as the takeaway firm was insisiting on payment as her name was on the order. Mrs Owen had been subject to similar incidents in the past and suspected it was the youth next door. Following enquiries with the firm and via the computer used to make the order, PCSO Jan Simlesa was able to identify that the youth was responsible. When challenged, he admitted harassing Mrs Owen and received a Harassment Order. Mrs Owen is grateful for the enquiries made by PCSO Simlesa and has stated that she feels a lot safer since Jan resolved the incident.

19577. PC 2418 Paul Gooden
PC Gooden has helped us recently after a spate of incidents at our home ranging from minor phone calls etc to all my tyres being slashed and other vandalism. He seems to have been very pro active - going and talking to people who might have been involved even though there would be no proof. This has made us feel much safer and I think (and hope) it might have prevented further problems. He also offered lots of useful advice and introduced us to PCSO Sharon Bowman who will also be offering support. Additionally he has discussd issues with my teenage son who needed some advice about avoiding getting into trouble. All in all it feels to us as though he has gone that extra mile to really try and sort things out.

My partner and I were subject to homophobic hate crime in the mining village where we lived. It got to the stage where I stopped going out at all. He has been working with us over the last few months to help us get moved into suitable accomadation in a safer area and gave us lots of reassuring advice helping us in the short term with safety locks for the bungalow and gave us personal safety alarms. He backed our application to be rehoused 100% and came with us with our meeting with the homeless team at the council. We were given a priority B+ waiting and within a short term, we successfully bid and are moving into our new house in a few weeks time. He came with us to view the property and has been always been on hand to give us his views on each area/home we have bid in so that we can be reassured we are moving to a nicer and safer area. His manner has always been polite, friendly and upbeat. It has helped change my perception of the police and shows that sexuality is no barrier for receiving an excellent service from the police. Hes always been very modest and I think an award is well deserved. He has made a big difference to our lives by helping to secure our move.

She was absolutely brilliant at moving the under age kids drinking and the vandals from our area. Not only that but she was instrumental in catching and stopping the motor bikes using Bessemer Community Park as a race track. Everthing we have asked of her, if she could she has done. She desrves the WOW award for her forever helpful actions, always with a smile; you could do with more like her.

Paul has been the local beat officer for the last two years and ever since he arrived my life has improved ten fold. He has resolved the issues previous police officers failed to do. He is by far the best police officer I have dealt since living here for the last 40 years. My health has improved as I no longer have problems with local youths who used to make my life hell. I know if I call Paul he will do his best to resolve any problems I might have. I just wish all police officers were like him. SIMPLY THE BEST.
