33849. DC 891 Anna Phillips
Where do I begin...Anna helped my daughter in many ways..she also helped my little family to stay strong through a hard time. I think at times if Anna wasnt so good at her job and so understanding and reassuring, i dont think my daughter would still be here. Anna put a sparkle back into my daughters eye and lifted a lot of pain from her. These few words cant say how much Anna has helped us. She is our guardian Angel and gave me huge confidence in the justice system..ty very much this Lady is simply the best x

33624. PCSO 6358 Jean Fletcher
I would just like to send my praises to you about the police officer who helped me yesterday in Durham City Centre, her name is PCSO Jean Fletcher. I was in a spot of trouble after having a disastrous day rushing to get new passports in Durham a place I didnt know and did a rather silly thing in the hurry and forgot which car park I parked in. This police lady kindly walked with me to the car park and helped me look for my car after I had spent a lot of time looking stupidly in the wrong car parks. She was really understanding and kind and quite honestly after I left Durham I came away with a really good impression of how helpful the people I met were there. Having two children back at home with my parents I was getting a bit panicky as I had a 3 hour journey ahead of me. Please pass on my gratitude and I hope she will get some praise from for her great attitude, she saved my day!Kind regards

33614. PC 2148 Sam Turner
On 28 March 2013 I was hit by a continental HGV on the A1 and pushed down the road some 100 metres. The first officer on the scene was an off duty officer from West Yorkshire who immediately helped me to call for help. Sam was the first officer to attend from Durham and immediately took charge of the situation whilst ensuring I was ok at the same time. Several patrol cars, Highways Agency and the Air Ambulance attended the scene. Sam calmly dealt with all the agencies and called off the air ambulance before it landed! He helped me to arrange recovery of my car and a replacement vehicle by letting me use his mobile phone as mine was low on battery and he compiled all the information I needed to complete information needed by my accident management department at work. All of this information was taken from a driver who did not speak English. Another accident occurred while we were making arrangements for the recovery and to send the driver onwards. Again Sam took control of this development. As a manager for a large construction company I was impressed by Sams calm, logical and organised approach to dealing with a major incident with so many unusual aspects (at least for me).

33601. DC 2170 Peter Lonsdale & PC 1941 Victoria Kerr
I would to nominate Peter & Vicky for their excellent work in the retrieval of my top end mountain bike which was worth several thousand pounds and the apprehension of the culprits. They acted quickly and professionally after receiving a tip off and obviously did a lot of thinking on their feet as the operation moved at a great pace. Their commitment and quick thinking was clear throughout and their communication with me was first class. The bike was actually stolen from inside the house by the criminals pretending to be perspective eBay purchasers, this greatly upset my elderly mum, who only a couple of weeks earlier had lost my father to cancer; the theft left her feeling even more vulnerable and to be honest was close to meltdown. When Peter informed us that they had set up a sting operation and caught the thieves, it made my mum smile, the first time I had seen her do so since my father passed away, it has made a big difference to her and she now feels a lot safer knowing your officers are out there doing a good job protecting us. A really great job, carried out very well by two committed officers, we are extremely grateful and believe they deserve a big pat on the back for their efforts.Well done! Many Thanks.

33472. DC 2246 Martin Wilson
Submitted on behalf of the IP.On 28th December 2012, I was unfortunately a victim of crime, when an offender(s) entered my home address whilst myself, my husband and my two young sons aged one and five respectively, slept in our beds. The trauma, as I am sure you are aware, was unbearable, imagining a complete stranger going through your personal belongings and wondering whether they would return. This incident has left all of our family, particularly our five year old son, who was previously of a very outgoing character, wary about going downstairs on a morning, for fear of what may be encountered. At the outset, when uniform Police attended, I felt that mine must be the only crime that they had to deal with, and was frustrated at the pace, of what I perceived, the investigation was taking place. I conducted a number of enquiries myself with Boots, Next and Game outlets for which vouchers had been amongst property stolen within the burglary, and reported my findings back to the Police. I was later contacted by Detective Constable Martin Wilson, who informed me that he was now investigating the Burglary, and that relevant CCTV had been recovered, viewed and a potential offender identified; a great relief to our family. DC Wilson conducted what I and my father, a retired Police Officer, thought to be a thorough, efficient and expeditious enquiry, which resulted in the offender being arrested and interviewed. At all stages of the enquiry DC Wilson kept me up to date with how the investigation was progressing and the custody status of the offender. In mid- March 2013 DC Wilson attended my home in order to obtain a victim personal statement, and explained in fine detail the options available to the courts, should the offender be convicted, and showed genuine empathy in regards to the manner that this incident had impacted on my family, particularly my children. The reason I write this letter is to ask you to pass my family’s thanks to DC Wilson, and to let you know that he is a credit to your department, in these days when far too much criticism is levelled at the Police. DC Wilson is a Detective who has the time to show sympathy and empathy to victims, whilst leaving no stone unturned in an investigation in order to bring offenders to justice. Thank you once again.

32703. PC 1943 Lorraine Nelson
Lorraine took her time to listen to me and told me all the information and help I needed due to a fall out with my partener. I have asked the police in the past for help and no-one has taken the time to listen. I think she is an absolute credit to the police force and i hope she gets noticed for this. I would like to say a very big thank you to her and I now have trust in the police that they are not all the same.

32537. PC 145 Alistair Coulson
I would like to nominate PC Alistair Coulson for a WOW award. I have small children and a limited support network and have suffered domestic violence which has left me feeling weak, vulnerable, anxious and upset. PC Coulson became involved in my situation and immediately took control. He arranged for my children to be looked after while I visited the hospital and than arranged for my injuries to photographed. He was positive and supportive and his reassurance gave me the confidence to do the right thing. He has given me the strength to go on and I am now in a much better place. I cannot thank PC Coulson enough.BProduct

32523. PC 2270 John Tyers
In January 2013, I was the victim/witness of a theft from my vehicle. The OIC PC John Tyers was very diligent in his enquiries which eventually led to the arrest of the offender. He provided much needed support to me following such a stressful incident and kept me updated at all times. When the case was closed, PC Tyers was able to return some of my property which had been stolen: I could not have expected a better service and he is a credit to Durham Constabulary; thank you.

32403. PC 1607 Patrick Varley & PC 145 Alistair Coulson
A Mr David McDonald from Gilesgate, Durham, was connected through to the front counter 20/3/13. He was calling to express his admiration of the good police work of two officers (believed to be 145 + 1607) who attended to his neighbour. Mr McDonald said he was aware his neighbour suffered from mental health problems and that the Police had attended with mental health workers to section him. He went on to say that his neighbour had become upset and uncooperative towards those present and the Police Officers called on him to see if his presence would help calm his neighbour. He said he witnessed the officers calming his neighbour down and persuading him to cooperate with the staff present including as to which items/articles he would be allowed to take with him into hospital. He said that the officers “moved his neighbour from being really upset to smiles”. McDonald further added that he had been a prison officer for many years and understood how difficult it can be dealing with people suffering with mental health problems and he recognised the tact and skills required to handle such sufferers and he described the officers as being “outstanding”. Mr McDonald had been asked to pass on the thanks from his neighbours son. On closing, Mr McDonald added that the officers also returned to make sure his neighbours car was locked and his milk in the fridge .

32055. PCSO 7184 Rebecca Carey
As a resident of Howden le Wear I would like to nominate PCSO Carey for a WOW award. When I moved to the village it had alot of problems with youth related ASB. This year the problem has dramaticaly reduced and there have been no fires to speak of. I put this down to PCSO Careys hard work, problem solving and working with local authorities, schools and residents to solve the issues. I am also a serving Police officer so apprieciate how much time and effort she must have put into this. Thanks to her work I think this past year the village has been a much better place to live and I think she deserves this award.

31697. Sgt 2062 Allan Chance
On 16th January 2013, I was totally lost in Durham because of failure of both my cellphone and my GPS. I was trying to find a friend of many years and was supposed to spend the night at his house. After driving aimlessly for 90 minutes and not being able to obtain informed directions from several citizens, I happened on a patrol car occupied by Allan Chance (Badge 2062).It was about 9:30 in the evening, as Mr Chance was parking to surveille a roadway. I stopped and explained to him my predicament. He kindly made some inquiries for me and then led me with his car to my friends residence. Throughout, I found Mr Chance entirely professional. Were it not for his responsiveness and knowledge of how to navigate such a situation, I would probably have spent a freezing night in Durham without finding my friend.I strongly commend Allan Chance to you. He is everything that the British police should be. He owed me absolutely nothing but was entirely helpful, understand, and, as I have indicated above, professional. He was quite no-nonsense in his fulfillment of his helpfulness to me, and his willingness to provide assistance was all the more appreciated.Additionally, I found Mr Chance jovial and yet straightforward. His personality and professionalism help to explain why Durham is so successful in attracting tourists. The economy of Durham, as well as the everyday business of catching crooks, depends on Constabulary members such as Allan Chance. Besides, his uniform was impeccable. Thats why I noticed the badge number, 2062.If you have have any questions, you are welcome to communicate with me. Please consider Mr Chance for a WOW award. I really am grateful to him, a deserving individual.

31515. PC 230 Tracey Hill
On Sunday 24th February 2013 around 9 30 pm PC 230 Tracey Hill and PC 110 Gary Barnes attended the sudden death of my mother. Both officers were compassionate but I would like to nominate PC Hill for the WOW award. This police officer went above and beyond her duty. She showed compassion and sensitivity in assisting both myself and my sister in cleaning up our mam immediately after her death. She also helped us to put clean clothes on her before the undertaker came. This allowed us to feel mam had retained her dignity. We were so grateful to PC Hill, truly an outstanding caring officer who went that extra mile for us. She is an asset to your force deserving recognition for this act of human kindness.

We are very sorry to see her go as she has done an excellent job for our village being pro-active against anti social behaviour. 31381. PCSO 7415 Neil Stonehouse
I nominate Neil for his excellet working committment to working with diverse communities . I have delivered a number of sessions with him around the subject of hate crime in schools . I have also witnessed the work which he does for the LGB and T community in helping and supporting them . One example was when I organised an social event in Durham Gala and neil had identified that 3 of his service users had been living in fear and very in fear and very isolated at the time due to having problems living in there community . These people had been victims of hate crime . Neil went out of his was for his service users to attend the event and even supported them to get there on the evening . The service users were so grateful and really enjoyed the night this was a consultation event also and the service users were asked there views on living in Durham and been LGB or T . This might seem little to most people however its a massive thing to build peoples confidence who have been rejected and subjects of hate crime so to me its massive . Also neil always goes out of his way to sign post and direct people to the right sort of support . Neil I think is a very humble and caring person who I know will think well "its all part of my job " however some people go beyhond their jobs and for me neil is definatally a WOW person

30944. PCSO 7046 Holly Dobson & PC 132 Peter Akiens
On the afternoon of the 13th december 2012 I was coming back from Stanley got off the bus at top of the street, walked down Valiaint Way; that day the ice was thick upon the roads and paths, I came to the corner and slipped upon the ice and injured my fingers was shocked by it and shook up, tryed to get up slipped and fell again. Officers were coming up the road in the van and I had to wave them down. They stopped and on seeing that I had hurt myself, got out of the van and helped me inside whilst they called for an ambulance and took me down home to wait for an ambulance to take me to hospital. I went to hospital and was told that I had dislocated two fingers on my hand. If the officers had not been there that day, could of injured myself more with the shock and instability from the fall. I know that they too were having problems coming down the street with the roads being very icy but they were my knights in shinning armour that day and am grateful for their help. Thank you.

31086. PCSO 6014 John Angus
John is the best PCSO in the Durham Constabulary, an excellent people person, he gets back to me whenever he is needed to. He puts himself out even if off duty. He understands the word on the street and acts accordingly to each situation that presents itself. He is a constant face in the community and even outside his area/constabulary popping over to North Yorkshire as a cross border representative sharing and gaining local knowledge. Keeping the Rural community safe and reassuring them of a police presence. Its great having John as our Cross Border PCSO as he understands the needs and concerns that rural people have. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK WE LOVE YOU !!

31010. PCSO 6846 Vanessa Gray
Would like to nominate PCSO 6846 Vanessa Gray for a WOW award - she has served our community in Burnhope for almost 5 years and is now being moved on to a new area. We are sorry to see her go as she has given her utmost to make our village what it is today i.e. a much nicer place to live with very little crime and only the odd bout of antisocial behaviour. If an incident had been reported we knew that Vanessa would pull out all stops to solve any problems and to this end we would like to thank her for all the effort and hard work she has put into our community during the last 5 years.

30842. PC 29 Lesley Nixon & PC 2131 Carl Adams
I was involved in a Mental Health Act Assessment this evening which required assistance from the Police in assisting an elderly woman to leave her home to go to hospital after she was detained under the Mental Health Act. Both PC Nixon and PC Adams dealt with the patient in a very caring and sensitive manner. After all attempts to persuade the woman to leave the house of her own volition failed, the two Officers conveyed her to the waiting ambulance with the minimum of fuss, the minimum of force and with good humour. Without their sensitive and efficient involvement what was a very delicate situation could have taken considerably more time and resources from a number of agencies to resolve. With grateful thanks to both Officers.
