From the moment i entered the ward she made me feel welcomed and cared for, checking reguarly if i was ok. When taking my obs, there was a crash from the toilets and nicola immediately checking i was ok, ran to check the patient inside was safe and ok. I have to say her quick reaction was great to see and i believe she is a great credit to this unit and to the trust. If all staff where like nicola then visits to hospital for treatments would be a much nice experience. Thank you very much for your kind care.

Nominated By: Lisa Rutland-Mantle
Date: 22/04/13 10:16:27 //print "http://www.thewowawards.co.uk/rss/$comment[id]\n"; Gemma Forde http://www.thewowawardswebs.co.uk/asph/recent_nominations.php?limit=10&page=1&cid=137 I have recently been to the infusion suite at Ashford Hospital for 3 days. I have to say that Gemma the Team Leader was an amazing member of staff. She treated everyone in the suite, patients and staff alike with due respect and her patients with people was amazing. She was being called all the time and never was phased even delaying breaks and working late to ensure everything and everyone was delt with accordling. She had genuine concern regarding patients and my care by her was exemplary. She is definately a credit to the Trust and to her profession.

Nominated By: Lisa Rutland-Mantle
Date: 22/04/13 10:10:41 //print "http://www.thewowawards.co.uk/rss/$comment[id]\n"; Mr Tahir Ali http://www.thewowawardswebs.co.uk/asph/recent_nominations.php?limit=10&page=1&cid=137 Myself and my husband would like to nominate Mr Tahir Ali for the ongoing outstanding care he has, and continues to give our 10 year old daughter, Georgia. Mr Ali first treated Georgia last August when she fell from a swing, sustaining extensive injuries to her left arm, including open fractures to her wrist and forearm and dislocation of her elbow. After a short time in A & E, it became apparent that Georgia had no blood supply to her hand. She was taken straight to theatre at around 7pm (Friday 3rd August). Some time later my husband received a call from the orthopaedic surgeon to say they were having problems with the arteries in Georgias arm and would need to call in the vascular surgeon.At around 5am on Saturday morning, Mr Ali (who was the vascular surgeon on call that night) came to find us in person to tell us that Georgia had trapped both arteries in her arm (severing one) and had also had a blood clot. He had performed an arterial bypass on Georgias arm and managed to save it, but she would need to be very closely monitored. Throughout the next day, Mr Ali kept a close watch on Georgia, calling by to see her regularly and instructing the nursing staff to call him immediately should there be any problems. It became evident that the huge amount of swelling to Georgia’s arm, once again, restricted the blood supply to her hand. I have never been so afraid in all my life – I thought my little girl was going to lose her arm.Mr Ali had already thought ahead of what he would do if the pressure restricted the blood supply again. By that evening, Georgia was back to theatre where she underwent a fasciotomy to relieve the pressure. When she came back to the ward her hand was pink again with a blood supply, and without the need to harvest an artery from her leg. My husband and I were amazed at Mr Ali’s dedication to helping our daughter. We both commented that he must hardly have slept the entire weekend.Georgia was then taken back to theatre every other day for dressings to be changed and her arm was put in a suction dressing for several days in the hope that a skin graft could be avoided and the wounds closed in the normal way. Mr Ali came to see her every day, usually multiple times, including on a Saturday when he was actually on leave and about to go out with his family. My husband had called him to say that Georgia’s suction dressing was leaking and we weren’t sure what to do. Mr Ali changed the dressing personally, despite delaying his day out with his family, and we were so impressed and grateful for this. Unfortunately the suction dressing did not reduce the swelling enough, so Mr Ali contacted a colleague from Wexham Park Hospital and arranged for them to come to St Peters to assist him with Georgia’s skin graft. The skin graft was successful and healed beautifully. Mr Ali continued to keep a close eye on the graft as it healed.In total Georgia was in hospital for almost 3 weeks and, during this time often became very ‘down’ and was in a lot of pain – all she wanted to do was go home. She would react very badly to many of the doctors and nurses that visited her, but Mr Ali managed to get Georgia to trust him and he was the only person that could calm her down when pain and frustration became too much for her. In our opinion, Mr Ali is an exceptional doctor and surgeon and, therefore, we would like to nominate him for a WOW award. He continues to see our daughter regularly and has assisted with any problems or issues we have had along the way, including supplying detailed information to other hospitals where Georgia has also received further treatment. Throughout Georgia’s hospital stay, Mr Ali kept us fully informed with regards to her care and we felt he showed real empathy for us as a family.We believe Mr Ali went above and beyond his duty to ensure that our daughter received the absolute best care at all times and he continues to do so to this day.Our daughter is now writing again with her left hand – this is something that we didn’t think she would ever do and though, many wonderful surgeons, doctors, nurses and therapists have helped our daughter, we believe that without Mr Ali, this recovery would not have been possible.

Nominated By: Mrs Lisa T
Date: 21/04/13 18:56:19 //print "http://www.thewowawards.co.uk/rss/$comment[id]\n"; Dr T Ali http://www.thewowawardswebs.co.uk/asph/recent_nominations.php?limit=10&page=1&cid=137 Excellent surgeon, couldnt have asked for better patient care for my dad.

Nominated By: Rachel S
Date: 21/04/13 18:15:29 //print "http://www.thewowawards.co.uk/rss/$comment[id]\n"; Jose Barbosa http://www.thewowawardswebs.co.uk/asph/recent_nominations.php?limit=10&page=1&cid=137 I am so impressed with the attention Jose pays his job, nothing is too much effort the ward sparkles when he has been working here that day. Mr. Ali was called and performed a life saving operation (this operation has a 98% mortality rate) and my husband is now at home recuperating before he has the next major operation to tie up all the loose ends. Mr. Ali has been extremely approachable, happy to talk to immediate family members, explains everything and has given us so much hope and confidence. He is not only a remarkable surgeon but also a thoroughly nice and caring person. The family strongly feels that we are all extremely fortituous to have had Mr. Ali as the surgeon in charge. I was on holiday in Australia when this happened and flew back immediately. In the meantime, my two daughters had had to deal with everything. He was so kind and considerate with them. They had told Mr. Ali that I was arriving on the Saturday morning and it was arranged that I could visit my husband in the ICU at 10.00 a.m. Although it was a Saturday, Mr. Ali came in specially to see me - what a remarkable and caring man. This is DEFINITELY a WOW award experience.

Nominated By: Wendy Davis
Date: 18/04/13 19:46:19 //print "http://www.thewowawards.co.uk/rss/$comment[id]\n"; Liz Taylor http://www.thewowawardswebs.co.uk/asph/recent_nominations.php?limit=10&page=1&cid=137 WOW, We couldnt do this without her. She was compassionate and thorough. My mother, who used to work as a nursing Sister, was very impressed. Excellent. My mother would like to pass on her thanks.

Nominated By: Helen Elizabeth Miller
Date: 14/04/13 14:35:18 //print "http://www.thewowawards.co.uk/rss/$comment[id]\n"; Alice Thompson - INTERNAL http://www.thewowawardswebs.co.uk/asph/recent_nominations.php?limit=10&page=1&cid=137 In September last year, whilst staying in a cottage in South Shields, I fell from the top of a flight of stairs and badly broke the top of my right arm. It has been interesting to see how the hospital works from a patients perspective and I cannot compliment the staff highly enough who have dealt with my case since registering this episode at St Peters - from the staff in Rowley Bristow - physicians, receptionists, radiographers but, in particular, I would like to nominate Alice Thompson, who has been my physio during this time. I had my first session with Alice last year and was informed afterwards that, as I was a member of staff, I would be eligible to be seen by Jonathan Shepherd, but as I didnt know Jonathan and I had really liked the way Alice had conducted my first physio session, I decided I would like to stay under her for my physio. My admiration and respect for the Physiotherapists has grown so much throughout this time. In the shoulder classes I have attended - they have all been so helpful - Leon and Jesal in particular. But Alice has been amazing - so professional - I have the utmost confidence in her and really do not know where I would be now without the physio that I have received! To put so much effort, thought and care into getting my arm back to how it was originally has been such an eye opener - I couldnt have asked for better care. When I think back to how it was originally and the steps that have had to take place to get me to where I am now - I just cannot express how much it has meant to me and Alice has been so professional, intelligent and determined throughout - there is still a way to go but I am so glad that I am able to recommend her for a WOW (hope she doesnt mind) but I think she deserves the recognition and also the rest of the Physiotherapy Team too - thank you so much.

Nominated By: Debbie Roberts
Date: 12/04/13 11:36:09 //print "http://www.thewowawards.co.uk/rss/$comment[id]\n"; Pauline Sandu - INTERNAL http://www.thewowawardswebs.co.uk/asph/recent_nominations.php?limit=10&page=1&cid=137 I have had recent cause to consult Pauline and I have found her extremely helpful. However, I am also in receipt of an enormous amount of positive feedback from other members of Trust staff who have consulted with her. Pauline obviously has huge knowledge of her subject, as one would expect of her, but she combines this with exemplary listening skills, great empathy and understanding and an amazing abilty to remember details given to her months or even sometimes years before! I believe Pauline to be of the Trusts greatest and often hidden assets. I would like to offer Pauline my sincere appreciation and thanks.

Nominated By: Judith Allford
Date: 11/04/13 09:59:28 //print "http://www.thewowawards.co.uk/rss/$comment[id]\n";
